Schools - elementary and preschools

There are 8 elementary schools in Gardabaer, teaching grades 1-10, two of those are privately run schools, The International School and Barnaskóli Hjallastefnunnar,  further information about schools can be found here.  To apply for a place in an elementary school you need to fill in an application on Gardabaer´s website, Þjónustugátt, which you can find here.   On Þjónustugátt you can find all other applications for service in Gardabaer.

Health services

Health services can be found at Gardabaer Health Clinic/Heilsugæsla Garðabæjar, Gardatorgi 7, 2. floor, tel. 513-5500 or at heilsugaeslan.is.  In emergencies please call 112.  

Public Library

The public library is also located at Gardatorg 7, ground floor, more information can be found at bokasafn.gardabaer.is.

Useful information - moving to Iceland - equal rights

A new brochure with important information about moving to Iceland, called "First steps" can be found on the Multicultural Centre website, one for citizens inside of EEA and EFTA and one for citizens outside of EEA and EFTA .

The office of equal rights has made a pamphlet about rights for immigrants in Iceland. The pamphlet contains useful information regarding the Icelandic justice system and Icelandic society. It addresses issues such as equal rights and gender equality, residence permits, trafficking in human beings, divorce, custody issues, issues regarding rights of access, financial issues, violence and threats in intimate relationships. It also contains references to further information for assistance, for instance addresses, telephone numbers and websites for various institutions and organisations.
